Which sub-personalities are running your life without you even knowing about them?
Have you ever heard a voice in your head? Or maybe two or three? Have they ever argued? Welcome to your sub-personalities! Your personality is actually broken up into many sub-personalities that you might hear as different voices in your head competing for your attention. For example you might hear a voice that suggests "Lets go to see a movie"? which is then contradicted by another voice that says "No you really must stay at home and do some more work"?. This dialogue is the signpost to an inner world of sub-personalities that are actually running not only your thoughts, but also your emotional states, behaviours and results in life.
Some of the most common sub-personalities are the Pusher, Pleaser, Perfectionist, Rulemaker, Responsible Parent, Inner Child, Couch Potato and Inner Critic. Each of these sub-personalities or selves has a different agenda for you, with unique concerns, feelings and views of the world. This is why there often seems to be an internal conflict running as these selves disagree with each other.
This is a totally normal process and all these selves serve important functions for us at different times. However, the problem is that we are simply not aware of these sub-personalities and therefore are being run by them. When you are strongly identified with a self, it is actually running you on automatic pilot. A sub-personality can only be one particular way so when it takes over you have no choice in your thoughts, feelings, responses and actions which can cause problematic results in all areas of your life.
Voice Dialogue offers a process where these selves are identified, explored and then objectively looked at from the vantage point of the "aware ego"? or the neutral observer. With this awareness these aspects can now be more consciously integrated so that we can use them when we need them and let go of them when they’re not relevant. After all when the Pusher has pushed us to do a hard day’s work sometimes we need to be able to let go and be the "couch potato"? to rest and recuperate!
Once we gain more internal balance and choice we can start to explore deeper into our true identity beyond these programmes and discover a peace and contentment that is no longer affected by life’s events.
